Keeping your home safe

General safety

  • Always allow council officers and contractors access to your home to complete safety checks and repairs.
  • Report any damage, fault or safety concern as soon as possible.

Windows

  • Never tamper with a window restrictor, it prevents windows from opening too wide and helps stop falls.
  • If a restrictor is broken or damaged, report it immediately.
  • Inspect your windows regularly for cracks, broken locks, or loose parts.
  • Keep windows closed and locked when not in use, especially in rooms used by children.
  • Store window keys somewhere safe and easy to find in case of a fire.
  • Keep furniture and other items away from windows, children may climb on them.
  • Never leave children alone in rooms with open windows.

Balconies

  • Don’t leave children alone in rooms with open doors to balconies.
  • Never lean over, sit, or climb on balcony walls or railings.
  • Do not cover your balcony with vinyl sheets, tiles or other materials, this can stop rainwater draining and make surfaces slippery.
  • Keep balconies tidy and free from clutter to avoid trip hazards.
  • Keep balcony furniture away from railings.
  • Never stand on balcony furniture.
