Apply to make alterations to a listed building
You must get permission before making changes to a listed building that could affect its character.
This includes:
- demolishing all or part of the building, including chimneys and internal walls
- demolishing buildings or walls within the grounds
- building an extension
- replacing the roof
- replacing windows
Before you start work on a listed building
You must email planning.registration@birmingham.gov.uk before you start any work.
We will tell you which permissions you need and how to apply. We will also send you the application forms and guidance.
We can advise on suitable materials and construction methods for listed buildings.
Working without permission
Carrying out work without permission is a criminal offence.
If you are convicted, you could:
- go to prison
- be fined
- receive both a prison sentence and a fine
We may also issue an enforcement notice. This can require you to return the building to its original condition.
If you do not comply with an enforcement notice, you could face further prosecution, fines or both.
