Family history research (Genealogy)

The Birmingham Register Office provides scanned copies of original birth, marriage and death register entries for the purposes of family history research (genealogy). Unlike copies you may order from the General Register Office, the copies from Birmingham Register Office include any signatures or marks.

To order a certificate you will need to tell us:

  • The year
  • The quarter
  • The GRO (General Register Office) Reference.

If you can’t tell us the GRO Reference we’ll search for records for the year you’ve given us, along with 2 years either side of it. If we can’t find the entry we won’t be able to search for it again without the GRO Reference.
