Trans community engagement

From October 2022 to October 2023 Birmingham Public Health partnered with Birmingham LGBT to disseminate the findings from the Trans community health profile and co-produce solutions to tackle identified health inequalities.

The project from Birmingham LGBT focused on the following key areas.

Wellbeing support group

A 6-week course focused on wellbeing, targeted towards young people aged 18 to 24 was set up to improve the mental health and wellbeing of the trans community by equipping them with practical tools for understanding their mental health and managing it in a community setting.

The sessions were focused on the following topics:

  • Session 1 – What is wellbeing?
  • Session 2 – Mental health toolkit
  • Session 3 – Who am I?
  • Session 4 – What is my place?
  • Session 5 – Where is the joy?
  • Session 6 – The future

Promotion of screening uptake

Targeted campaign to encourage trans people to attend breast, prostate and cervical cancer screening programmes - #screeningwithpride.

GP symposium

Event targeted towards GPs, practice managers and primary care networks based in Birmingham.

The event was supported by experts in the field and covered the following:

Experiences of GP services and referral to GICs – Dr James Barrett (Lead Clinician at Tavistock and Portman NHS Adult Gender Identity Clinic)

  • Gender dysphoria clinic adult referral pathway/criteria
  • Managing mental health of patients before and after referral
  • Role of the GP in ongoing care
  • Shared Care Agreements

Alternative access to gender identity treatment – Dr Rebecca Stephens (GP at The Gardens Surgery)

  • Safe hormone monitoring for self-medicating trans individuals
  • Bridging prescriptions
  • Gaining confidence and competence
