Trans community health profile

Overview

The Trans community health profile has identified and summarised the national and local evidence concerning the health, lifestyle behaviours and wider determinants of health that affect the trans community.

Although the focus of this report was health inequalities among the trans community in Birmingham, the limited available information on health inequalities has resulted in data being used from the UK and internationally where available.

Community definition

‘Trans’ is an umbrella term for people whose gender identity and/or gender expression does not align with their assigned sex at birth, including (but not limited to) transgender, non-binary, or genderqueer.

The term ‘trans’ is typically used alongside or instead of ‘transgender’, both as a shorthand for the term and inclusive of those who do not identify with a particular gender.

Population size

Population size estimates have been taken from the 2021 census for England and Wales. This was the first time that the census collected information on gender identity via the question “Is the gender you identify with the same as your sex registered at birth?”

  • England and Wales: 262,000 people identified that their gender identity was different from their sex registered at birth (0.5% of the total population)
  • Birmingham: 7,826 people identified that their gender identity was different from their sex registered at birth (0.85% of the total population)

The census may not accurately capture the number of trans people, due to the significant barriers to self-identification including mistrust in government data collection and perceived issues of safety and privacy.
