Sandra and Margaret's Shared Life story

Margaret first came to live with Sandra over four years ago for what was intended to be a short period of respite care. However, what began as a temporary arrangement soon blossomed into something much more enduring. When Margaret’s previous carer left the Shared Lives scheme, Sandra was approached to become her full-time carer. This decision would prove transformative and life changing for them both.

Margaret first came to live with Sandra over four years ago for what was meant to be a short period of respite care. However, this temporary arrangement soon became much more. When Margaret’s previous carer left the Shared Lives scheme, Sandra was asked to become her full-time carer. This choice proved to be transformative and life-changing for both of them.

Sandra’s journey into Shared Lives began during the Covid pandemic when she cared for her father. After his passing, she realised how much she valued caring for others. With a background as a police officer and more recently in sales, Sandra began questioning her career path. “With the children grown and the mortgage paid, I wondered why I was working so hard in sales when I could find greater fulfilment through fostering or Shared Lives,” she explained. Encouraged by her daughter, a social worker in fostering, Sandra explored Shared Lives and found it to be the perfect fit for her.

“At first I only planned to do respite care,” Sandra remembered. But her bond with Margaret quickly grew stronger. “We do many things together and have a lot of fun!” she said, smiling. “It has made me more patient and tolerant. I’ve learned so much from Margaret.”

Margaret’s life has changed significantly since moving in with Sandra. Once unable to go out alone, she now confidently walks to the local shops and uses her own contactless card. She is managing her money for the first time in her life. She’s learning to swim, has flown on a plane for the first time, and now enjoys annual holidays to Gran Canaria. “Shared Lives is wonderful,” Margaret said. “Everything is better. I have nothing to worry about. I’m happy.”

Preparing to head out together to pick blackberries in the sunshine, Margaret proudly showed off her outfit chosen for the occasion. She explained that before living with Sandra, she couldn't choose her own clothes. Now, her wardrobe and appearance reflect who she truly is. During their chat, Sandra shared, “We’ve revamped her wardrobe, and she gets her hair and nails done regularly.” Margaret also talked about her favourite outfits and how much she enjoys shopping.

Sandra supports Margaret in all aspects of her life, from attending church with a friend to trips to the theatre. Margaret has become a friendly and well-known figure in the neighbourhood, often stopping to chat with neighbours. At her day centre, she loves helping in the kitchen and spending time in the garden.

Looking back on their time together, Sandra said, “It’s hard to pick just one moment. It’s the small milestones and seeing her grow that stand out.” She is also honest about the challenges. “It’s not always easy. We have our moments.” But their bond is clear, rooted in mutual respect and affection.

Sandra credits her positive experience to the support she received early on. “It was really helpful to meet another carer and discuss what the scheme involves. Trust the matching process. Don’t rush into anything,” she advised.

Together, Margaret and Sandra have built a life filled with warmth, growth, and shared happiness. Their story shows the power of meaningful connection through Shared Lives.
