Maintaining and improving your council home

We maintain your home by carrying out repairs, planned improvements and all relevant health and safety checks to ensure that your home is decent and safe, and meets all regulatory requirements.

As part of our Capital Works Programme (CWP) we undertake planned improvements to your home which might include replacing:

  • all wooden front doors with UPVC when they are no longer fit for purpose, making them more secure and reducing future repair and maintenance costs
  • all single-glazed and non-UPVC windows with double-glazed UPVC windows, making your homes warmer and energy efficient.
  • roofs on homes when they are no longer fit for their purpose. We prioritise the roofs where we know there are issues or repairs needed
  • kitchens that are old and in poor condition, and/or may need extending, which may also involve alterations to the layout
  • bathrooms that are old and in poor condition

We will also service your heating system every year.

We are working to install more energy-efficient heating systems to improve the thermal comfort of your home and help to reduce your heating bills.

Other works

Some homes may also require other works, including:

  • energy efficiency works such as external wall insulation and ventilation
  • decorating communal areas
  • door entry systems
  • electrical rewiring
  • fire protection, chutes, and soil stacks
  • insulation works
  • Legionnaire's disease prevention
  • lift refurbishments
  • soffits, fascias and external painting
  • structural investigations
  • structural investment

We bid for additional money and help support important work such as reducing carbon emissions and improving the energy efficiency of your home.

We also continually update the information we hold on your home. This means we can target our works where they are most needed.

It is important that you allow us access to your property to complete any relevant surveys (stock condition surveys, retrofit assessments or safety checks (such as annual gas safety checks or electrical safety checks). This will help us make the right investment decision.

If we require access to your home, we will always contact you in advance to arrange a suitable appointment. All council colleagues and approved contractors carry identification.
