Apply for a Council Tax discount on homes adapted for people with disabilities
If your property has been adapted for you or someone you live with to support with a disability, you may be eligible for a discount on your Council Tax.
How we calculate the discount
This discount would be the same as you moving to a Council Tax band that is 1 level below what you are currently in. For example, if you are currently in Band C, with the discount you will move to Band B.
If you are in Band A, which is the lowest band, your discount will be equal to one ninth of the total Council Tax amount for Band D.
For further information, see Council Tax bands.
How to qualify
You qualify for this discount if your property has adaptations to support living with a disability.
These adaptations could include things like:
- ramps
- wider doors
- stairlifts
- handrails
- lever taps
You may also receive a discount if your property has any of the following features to support living with a disability:
- a room (other than a bathroom, kitchen or toilet) which is mainly used by, and is a requirement to meet the needs of, the disabled person – such as an extension to store large medical equipment
- an extra bathroom or kitchen, which is required to help meet the needs of the disabled person
- enough floor space inside the property to use a wheelchair required to meet the needs of the disabled person
How to apply
You can apply for the discount by completing our reduction for disabled facilities application form.
What happens next
Once we receive your application, we will contact you to discuss your situation and ask for any further information to support it. This may take up to 10 working days.
As part of the application process, we may need to visit your home to check that it meets the criteria for the discount. Your case officer will make a request for a visit, then arrange for an inspector to come to observe your home.
