Apply for an annexe Council Tax discount or exemption
An annexe is a building associated with or joined to your main property. It is commonly used as a living space, including features like a kitchen or bathroom.
If you are the owner or tenant of a property which has an annexe, you may be able to pay less on your Council Tax.
How to qualify
To qualify for a discount or exemption, your annexe must have its own Council Tax bill. This will mean it is classed as separate from your main property.
Criteria for a discount or exemption
Discounts for you or your family members
If the annexe is used as a living space by you or a member of your family, you can get 50% off your Council Tax bill.
Apply for a discount for you or a family member.
Exemptions for dependent family members
If you have a member of your family who lives in your annexe and is either:
- aged 65 or older
- severely mentally impaired
- substantially or permanently disabled
They are classed as dependent. This means that they are exempt from paying Council Tax.
Apply for a dependent family member exemption.
People who are not family members
If the person living in your annexe is not a member of your family, no discount or exemption will apply.
What happens next
After you submit your application, we will review it and contact you to tell you whether you have been awarded the discount. This may take at least 2 weeks.
