Lighting up the library for Vaisakhi 2026
Tuesday 14 April 2026
At twilight on Tuesday 14 April, the exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up orange to mark Vaisakhi.
Vaisakhi is one of the most important festivals in the Sikh calendar. It takes place every year on April 13 or 14 and marks the founding of the Khalsa in 1699 by Guru Gobind Singh. This moment is recognised as the birth of the Sikh identity.
Vaisakhi is also linked to the spring harvest, which gives the festival an added sense of celebration and renewal.
Across Sikh communities, the festival is a time for reflection, togetherness and joy. Many people visit their local Gurdwara for prayers and take part in community events.
How people celebrate
Celebrations often include:
- street processions known as Nagar Kirtan
- prayers and readings at local Gurdwaras
- singing and music
- Bhangra dancing
- the raising of the Nishan Sahib flag
