Lighting up the library for Ramadan 2026
Tuesday 17 and/or Wednesday 18 February 2026, depending on when the moon is seen.

After sunset on Tuesday 17 and Wednesday 18 February, the exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up green to mark the start of Ramadan.
Ramadan in the UK is expected to begin at sunset on Tuesday 17 February.
The first day of fasting will be Wednesday 18 February.
About Ramadan
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. It is a holy month for Muslims.
It is a time to think, pray and be kind. Muslims believe this is the month when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.
How Ramadan is observed
Muslims practise prayer, charity and gratitude throughout the year.
During Ramadan, many choose to increase these practices. This can include:
- fasting from dawn until sunset
- spending more time in prayer
- giving to others and volunteering
- reflecting and giving thanks
Families and communities often come together in the evenings to share food.
