Library of Birmingham lit with purple lighting at night

On Thursday, 20 November 2025, the Library of Birmingham will be lit purple to mark World Pancreatic Cancer Day.

World Pancreatic Cancer Day takes place on the third Thursday of November each year.
It brings together charities and not-for-profit organisations to raise awareness of pancreatic cancer, including its risks and symptoms.

About pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer develops when cells in the pancreas grow out of control and form a lump.

The pancreas has 2 main functions:

  • producing enzymes that help break down food so the body can absorb nutrients
  • producing hormones, including insulin, which control blood sugar levels

When the pancreas doesn’t work properly, it can cause problems with digesting food and controlling blood sugar.

Treatment for pancreatic cancer depends on the individual. Doctors look at each case to decide the best treatment options.
