Lighting up the library for World Alzheimer’s Day 2025

After sunset on Sunday 21 September, the exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up purple to support World Alzheimer’s Day.

This is a time to learn about dementia and support people who live with it.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia. It is a disease that damages the brain. Over time, it makes it harder for people to remember things, think clearly or do everyday tasks.
Most people who have dementia in the UK have Alzheimer’s disease. It starts many years before symptoms appear.
The biggest risk for Alzheimer’s is age. The older you are, the more likely you are to get it. After age 65, the risk doubles every 5 years.
Dementia is the biggest cause of death in the UK. It affects millions of people and their families.
