Lighting up the library for Remembrance

Sunday 10 November and Monday 11 November 2024

The Library of Birmingham with external red lightingThe exterior façade of the Library of Birmingham will be lit up to honour those who gave their lives in conflict at this annual time of Remembrance.

After sunset on Remembrance Sunday, 10 November, the exterior façade will be lit red, white and blue.

After sunset on Armistice Day, 11 November, the the exterior façade will be lit up red.

Remembrance Sunday

Remembrance Sunday is held in the United Kingdom as a day to commemorate the contribution of British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts.

It is held on the second Sunday in November - the Sunday nearest to 11 November, Armistice Day.

Armistice Day

Armistice Day is commemorated every year on 11 November to mark the armistice signed between the Allies and Germany for the cessation of hostilities on the Western Front of World War I.

It took effect at 11:00am on 11 November 1918 —the "eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month".

Remembrance Day service

Birmingham’s Remembrance Day service will take place on Colmore Row, opposite St Philip’s Cathedral, on Sunday 10 November 2024.
