A38 Selly Oak to Longbridge cycle route
Background
Between 23 June and 28 July 2025, we carried out a 5-week public consultation on plans for a new cycle route between A38 Selly Oak and Longbridge.
The proposals included a new 6km stretch of high-quality cycle route along the A38 Bristol Road.
This scheme would extend the existing cycle route from Birmingham City Centre to Selly Oak, creating a connected corridor all the way to Longbridge.
Once delivered, the route would offer a safer, more accessible, and more convenient option for people travelling by bike, helping to make cycling for everyday journeys a more attractive option.
This scheme forms part of the Birmingham Transport Plan, which seeks to meet the demands of the future by prioritising people over cars.
Consultation outcome
We received a total of 850 responses fo the consultation. Of these:
- 56% were supportive of the proposals
- 39% indicated that they did not support the measures
- 5% were neutral or did not provide a response
The outline business case was approved by Cabinet on 11 November 2025, marking an important milestone for the project.
What happens next
The next phase of development, progressing to full business case, is currently underway and is expected to be completed by June 2026.
