Sutton Gateway Active Travel Scheme

We  have been working with Royal Sutton Coldfield Town Council (RSCTC), West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) and local stakeholders to develop the Sutton Gateway Active Travel scheme.

The Sutton Gateway scheme is funded by the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), a programme managed by the Central Government in collaboration with the West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA). For this project, £25 million has been allocated.

Sutton Gateway Active Travel scheme will improve access to Sutton Coldfield Town Centre for people walking, wheeling and cycling, and travelling by public transport. By improving infrastructure, the project seeks to encourage people to change their travel behaviour and be less reliant on private cars. The scheme complements the Sutton Coldfield Town Centre Masterplan.

Scheme objectives

The scheme includes 15 proposals to improve the town centre, making it more appealing for residents and visitors. The goal is to encourage people to spend more time there, attract new investments, and boost the local economy.

Some of the proposed interventions include:

  • bus interchange improvements at lower parade and south parade
  • ring road transformation including fewer lanes for general traffic, segregated cycle routes in key areas, improvements to crossing facilities and speed limit reductions
  • improving the connection between Sutton Coldfield Town Centre, Sutton Park and Sutton Coldfield railway station

A summary document of the Sutton Gateway scheme can be found on the RSCTC website.

The scheme reached an important stage with the WMCA’s approval of the Strategic Outline Case (SOC), giving the project its first formal backing.

Currently, the project is in the early stages of development and will be subject to public consultation before the final business case is approved.
