Council Explores Longer Visiting Hours at New Hall Cemetery to Improve Community Access
Councillor Jamie Tennant has announced a trial of extended opening hours at Sutton New Hall Cemetery, giving visitors more flexibility to spend time remembering their loved ones.
This is part of the council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing its services, improving accessibility and ensuring that cemetery grounds remain safe, dignified and respectful spaces for all.
Sutton New Hall Cemetery currently closes at 4:00pm. As part of the new trial, the cemetery will remain open until 7pm significantly extending hours to better accommodate community needs, particularly for those who find it challenging to visit during standard daytime periods. This trial will end on 31 May, and the Council welcomes feedback during this period.
Councillor Jamie Tennant, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, said: “We know how important it is to have the time and space to visit our loved ones, without feeling rushed or limited by early closing times. This trial of extended hours at New Hall Cemetery is an opportunity for us to listen to our residents and shape services that reflect their needs. We are committed to ensuring our cemeteries are welcoming, accessible, and respectful places for everyone in our city.”
Improving access and visitor experience
Sutton New Hall Cemetery offers vehicle access from Lindridge Road, on‑site toilet facilities, disabled parking bays, and a small car park to support visitor needs. The extended opening hours trial will allow the Council to gather feedback on how expanded access might further benefit cemetery users, especially during peak visiting periods and religious or cultural observances.
Next Steps
The trial period, visitor feedback methods and any operational adjustments will be communicated in the coming weeks. Following the evaluation, the Council will determine whether to adopt extended hours permanently at Sutton New Hall Cemetery and potentially across other cemetery sites.
