How to tell someone you feel suicidal

It can be really scary to tell someone that you are feeling suicidal, but it is important that you do.

Here are some tips to help you:

Choose a good listener

Choose someone you trust who is a good listener. This could be a:

  • friend
  • family member
  • teacher
  • co-worker
  • healthcare professional or helpline

A way that works for you

Find a way to tell the person in a way that works for you.

This could mean sending a message in advance, letting them know you want to talk. Or you could write things down in advance to help your organise your thoughts.

If you find it hard to talk face to face, you could plan to do something at the same time to make it easier - such as going for a walk.

Be as clear as you can

It's okay to use the word suicide and let someone know how bad you are feeling.

The more honest you are, the more likely it is the person will be able to understand what you are telling them.

Be prepared

If you talk to a loved one, they may feel upset, shocked or confused after you tell them you feel suicidal. They may need time to digest what you have told them.

If you do not get the reaction you were hoping for, do not be disheartened. Keep reaching out to people and consider speaking to a professional until somone can give you the help you need.

Think about what you need

It may be helpful for the person to help you make a phone call or appointment.

They can help you make a support plan or a safety plan.
