About the BEAS grant programme
The Business Energy Advice Service (BEAS) programme provides free energy assessments (audits) and grants of £1,000 to £100,000 for eligible small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the West Midlands Combined Authority area.
The BEAS programme helps businesses:
- lower energy bills
- reduce carbon emissions
- improve sustainability
Check if your business is eligible for a grant
You can only request a grant for items identified as energy-saving measures in the energy audit report, with a payback period of at least 2 years.
You must complete your project within 3 months, including claiming the grant. For high-value, more complex projects, timescales may be negotiable.
The grant funding is aimed at owner-occupiers. If you lease your business premises, you must have at least 3 years remaining on the lease.
If you received BEAS funding as part of the 2024 to 2025 programme, you can apply to this programme if:
- you did not receive a grant of over £100,000
- there are still audit recommendations that you have not implemented
The grant is match-funded
You will need to provide the difference between the grant funding you apply for and the remaining cost of your project.
This is known as match funding.
The BEAS grant is 50% matched up to £100,000.
You can source match funding from:
- the private sector
- loans
- overdrafts
- savings
- company funds
These would be an eligible match.
Match funding must be secured and in place before you receive approval for your BEAS application.
You cannot source match funding from:
- other public sector funding
- asset finance or similar financial products, where an item is paid for in instalments beyond the 3 months allocated for the project, as this does not provide full evidence of defrayed expenditure
These would not be an eligible match.
Eligible costs
You can use the grant for a wide range of energy-saving measures, including:
- solar panels - maximum £50,000 grant at a 50% intervention rate
- ventilation systems - fans, distribution, destratification fans
- heating upgrades - replacement boilers, burners, heat pumps
- energy-efficient lighting - LED, controls, sensors
- refrigeration improvements
- insulation enhancements
- recycling and waste management - compactors, balers, crushers
- water management solutions
This list is not exhaustive and may be subject to changes.
You can engage consultants to help you complete your BEAS grant application form. However, you cannot include the cost of consulting or third-party services in the project costs for your grant application.
How the grant is paid
The approved grant will be paid retrospectively.
You will need to:
- provide invoices and evidence of payment
- show that you have the financial capacity to complete the project that you applied for funding
