Good sleep hygiene

Prioritising a good sleep routine is important for positive wellbeing.

A lack of sleep results in the release of the stress hormone cortisol. This results in increased stress levels, possible weight gain, and cardiovascular issues.

The steps to achieve a good sleep routine are:

  • going to bed and waking up at the same time each day
  • exercising during the day (not too close to bedtime) to increase tiredness
  • reducing screen time before going to bed
  • creating a good environment to sleep in such as a dark, cool, comfortable room
  • relaxing before sleep by listening to white noise, using the headspace app, or reading

Exercise

Regular exercise can help manage the effects of stress. It will not completely remove it, but will help by producing endorphins that boost our mood and improve our physical and mental health.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to incorporate daily exercise.

Research has shown that walking for 30 minutes, especially within a green space, can significantly improve wellbeing and reduce feelings of sadness and anxiety.

Even a 10-minute daily brisk walk combined with meditation (focusing on breathing and staying present) has been shown to improve wellbeing.
