Adult and child mental health

Mental health can be understood as broadly covering aspects of mental ill-health and mental wellbeing.

Mental wellbeing generally involves:

  • how we feel - hedonic wellbeing
  • how we function - eudemonic wellbeing

Wellbeing is related to the environment people live in, which makes it useful for measuring the impact interventions might have on the wellbeing of different groups in communities.

Poor mental wellbeing is not the same as mental illness, however they can affect one another, because poor mental wellbeing has been linked to increased risk of mental ill health.

Therefore, positive mental wellbeing can be considered a potentially positive and strengths-focused aspect of the mental health continuum.

The toolkit aims to measure an individual’s wellbeing and increase their Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale (WEMWBS) score following intervention.

Before you use the WEMWBS you will need to register for a licence from University of Warwick Medical School (WMS).
