On 19 September 2023, the Secretary of State for the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC) announced the government's proposals to handle our financial and governance problems.
The proposals included:
- the appointment of commissioners who are responsible for governance, scrutiny of strategic decision making, finance, and senior appointments
- a local inquiry to investigate the cause of the issues we face
More details of the proposed intervention are in a letter to the Chief Executive of Birmingham City Council stating that we had failed to comply with our Best Value duty.
The government announced the intervention and our commissioners on 5 October 2023.
