Healthy faith settings toolkits
Too many people in Birmingham experience poor health early in their lives, and there is a lot to be done to improve the situation for individuals, families, and communities.
Faith leaders play an important role in pastoral care and improving health and wellbeing in their communities.
To help them do this, we are creating a set of healthy faith communities toolkits for the 6 main faith communities in Birmingham. The toolkits will help faith leaders include health improvements in their everyday work.
About the toolkits
The toolkits describe opportunities to improve physical and mental health, with information about mainstream services and how to access them.
They are divided into a set of ‘health outcomes’ for community wellbeing, highlighting specific challenges for each community.
Topics cover all stages of life and include issues such as:
- healthy eating
- preventing infections
- health screening
Each section contains a snapshot of local health and wellbeing needs, and local service and support information.
There is a checklist at the end of each toolkit to help organisations and groups identify training and development requirements. It is designed for the faith setting to look at how they currently:
- support
- signpost
- offer interventions that look to address the health needs of the faith users
From 2022 to 2023, we worked with faith organisations to share the toolkits.
Through this work we gathered feedback on the:
- overall suitability of the toolkits
- content in the health topic sections
We used this feedback to improve the Christian, Hindu, Islamic and Sikh toolkits.
We also collected case studies showcasing faith-based work across Birmingham
We hope you find the toolkits useful, and we look forward to developing them further over time.
How to use the toolkits
We have created a short video to help faith organisations and leaders understand how to make the most of the toolkits:
