Birmingham City Council financial challenges - time to Reset

Renew a licence

You should apply to renew an existing HMO licence at least two months before the current licence runs out.

We need to know about any changes to your HMO when you apply to renew. These could include:

  • new bedrooms
  • an additional kitchen
  • new toilets or bathroom

You will also need to provide us with updated information to show you are still a ‘fit and proper’ person to be the licence holder.

Any new licence usually lasts for five years. We may issue a shorter licence if:

  • we are not satisfied with how you manage your HMO
  • you have delayed your renewal without a good reason

Renew a mandatory licence

Before you apply

There are some things that would be helpful to have to hand before you apply. These include:

  • payment for the HMO licence fee
  • current safety certificates – including for gas, electric and fire alarms
  • an updated declaration that any upholstered furniture in the property meets all fire safety regulations
  • a plan of the property if anything has changed
