Hand sanitizer and face coverings

Face coverings

Face coverings can protect against the spread of COVID-19 because they cover the nose and mouth, which are the main confirmed sources of infectious secretions and droplets.

A face covering should:

  • cover your nose and mouth and allow you to breathe comfortably
  • fit comfortably and closely against the face
  • be secured with ties or ear loops
  • be made of a material that you find comfortable and breathable, such as cotton
  • be made of at least two layers of material.
  • Unless disposable, it should be washable with other items of laundry, and dryable without being damaged.

For proper use of a face covering, you should:

  • wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use hand sanitiser, before putting one on or removing it
  • avoid wearing it on your neck or forehead
  • avoid touching the part of the face covering that goes over your mouth and nose
  • change the face covering if it becomes damp or if you have touched it.

More information

More information on facemasks is available on GOV.UK.

If you are unable to wear a face covering due to age, health or disability reasons, you can also download a free exemption badge by visiting the above link.

Hand sanitiser

Hand washing is one of the most important ways to stop the spread of COVID-19. It removes dirt, viruses and bacteria to stop them spreading to other people and objects.

You should wash your hands regularly for 20 seconds with soap and water.

For instructions on the best way to wash your hands, read the advice on the NHS website.

When soap and water isn’t available, a 60% (or more) alcohol-based sanitiser should be used. When using hand sanitiser, apply it to the palm of one hand and rub it all over your hands until they are dry.
