Overview

Sprint is a key element of delivering an integrated, environmentally friendly transport network for the West Midlands.

It has been designed to support our region's economic growth and expanding population, and will actively combat congestion by offering reliable, connected, and sustainable public transport.

Sprint bus priority corridor will link Walsall to Solihull and Birmingham Airport in one continuous route. This scheme aims to help reduce journey times and traffic congestion, as well as provide an attractive alternative to driving.

What’s happening?

Sprint will extend bus lanes and prioritise buses at junctions to make journeys shorter and more reliable. It will create enhanced bus shelters to improve comfort and safety, and it will introduce zero-emission double-decker Platinum buses.

Phase one

Sprint is being delivered in two parts with phase one now complete. Extended bus lanes, over 70 purpose-built shelters and priority signalling at busy junctions, have all been installed as part of the first phase. All services using the corridor are benefitting from enhanced bus priority measures and journey time savings of up to 22%, which means an improved travelling experience for all bus passengers with more reliable, regular, and predictable journey times.

Sprint has:

  • built 95 new bus shelters
  • saved up to 20% journey time during peak hours
  • supported the region’s economy by extending bus lanes
  • introduced zero-emission double decker buses

Phase two

A consultation was carried out on the phase two proposals along the A45 and A34 in Birmingham earlier this year, with a decision to proceed expected in the autumn. Phase two will bring more bus priority measures with construction expected to begin early next year if approval is given.
