Project updates

May 2025

During May, our 3-week full road closure on Aston Hall Road was successfully completed and Span 6-7 scaffold fully dismantled.

The team have carried on working within Frank Dudley Limited’s land to complete the dismantle of Span 4-5 which will be finished by the end of May. We also had a one-night road closure on Electric Avenue to install TVCB barriers where Span 14 scaffold has recently been installed, meaning we now have access to this area of the viaduct and the crossboxes at Pier 14 so works can be carried out.

We have a full closure on Queens Road planned for Saturday 28 and Sunday 29 June to complete final works underneath the south part of the viaduct, a diversion route will be in place during this period.

Taziker have continued strengthening works on mainline boxes between Spans 25 and 27, including at DP09 near B27.

Crossboxes B19A and D15C have also undergone strengthening, and internal painting completed to D17C and B16A, and a full blast and paint of Span 18 has been carried out.

HS Carlsteel’s activities this month have included the strengthening of mainline boxes between Spans 19 and 21, and at crossboxes B11A, D3C, and B3A. Splice repairs were carried out at Span 10 using a MEWP (Mobile Elevating Work Platform). We have completed the work after Span 9, which has included additional tasks like splice plate work, service hole adjustments, and access hatch modifications (located within Salts Healthcare).

We hosted a Health, Safety, Environmental, Quality, and Sustainability (HSEQS) standdown on 15 May for the entire project team, with over 100 attendees and 12 guest speakers, at the Majestic Conference Centre in Aston. The event focused on reinforcing our core values, sharing best practices, and promoting a culture of continuous improvement. Key topics included:

  • mental health awareness
  • safe working at height
  • environmental responsibility
  • lessons learned from recent project activities

Attendees engaged in interactive sessions and Q and As, fostering open dialogue and collaboration across disciplines.

Feedback from the team was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting the event’s value in strengthening our collective commitment to safety and excellence.

We are continuing with our preparation for the upcoming rail blockade, scheduled from Monday 28 July to Sunday 3 August. This will affect the Walsall and Sutton Coldfield lines, located at Spans 11 and 16–18. The blockade is essential to allow work to proceed safely and without risk to operatives in these areas.
