Where to go

Find a good dog breeder and make sure the puppy is well cared for. Puppies that are inbred or raised in poor conditions can have serious long-term health problems. Many puppies are also trafficked or illegally imported.

Licensed breeders are inspected and must follow rules set out in their licence. If you want to check if a breeder in Birmingham is licensed, email: c.s.animalwelfare@birmingham.gov.uk.

To learn more about buying a dog, including what to ask the breeder and what paperwork you need, visit the Kennel Club's website.

You could also consider adopting a rescued adult dog. Local animal rehoming centres offer support and advice. Rescue dogs are usually vaccinated, wormed and neutered, which can reduce your initial costs. Many dogs need good homes and a second chance.
