Local identity

Localism

Localism in Birmingham aims to improve service delivery in neighbourhoods and bend the organisational culture of the council and the wider public sector towards neighbourhood priorities and needs. Find out more about the Council’s Localism, policy and how we are working with neighbourhoods.

Design

The latest report from the Building Better, Building Beautiful Commission is available here, and sets out their aspirations to embed high quality design and natural beauty into local centres.

Historic Centres and Historic Buildings

The challenges facing retail are impacting on historic town centres and high streets. Historic England provides advice on how local planning authorities, owners, retailers, developers, local communities and other interested parties can respond to protect both the vitality and historic character of centres.

Improving a shopfront

Appropriately designed shopfronts and their continued maintenance have a great impact on the attractiveness of a centre.

Undertaking improvements to a shopfront may require planning permission. It is always good to get advice from the council’s Development Management Team.
