Beautification schemes photograph

A photograph of Russell Road Allotments Main Entrance 20 August 1953.

Birmingham City Council was very interested in modernising its own allotment provision. Even before the Thorpe report was published, it discussed ways in which allotments could be made more attractive and set out to ‘beautify’ its allotments. The beautification scheme included the planting of trees and shrubs on various sites. The inscription on the back of this photo reads, 'Ornamental entrance gates at Russell Rd. Allotments, designed by the City Architect, and erected in 1953 to commemorate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.
