Mother Goose (1890)

Mother goose 1890 illustration

The familiar character of Mother Goose is many hundreds of years old. A collector of traditional nursery rhymes and fairy tales, Mother Goose is often depicted as an elderly woman dressed in a tall hat and flowing cape, not too dissimilar to Welsh national costume. She appears in her own nursery rhyme “Old Mother Goose or The Golden Egg” which is also the title of a popular pantomime.

“Old Mother Goose
When she wanted to wander,
Would rise through the air
On a very fine gander.”
