In Fairyland was considered to be Richard Doyle’s finest work. First published in 1870, its 16 colour engravings and fine presentation made it one of the largest and most beautiful children’s books available.

Richard "Dickie" Doyle (1824 to 1883) worked as an artist for Punch magazine before becoming a children’s book illustrator. Richard Doyle was also the uncle of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of the famous fictional detective, Sherlock Holmes.
