In 1880, art publishers Raphael Tuck & Sons held a contest to find the best Christmas card designs in the country. The winning paintings were purchased from the artists and mass produced for sale, marking the beginning of a new Christmas tradition. The image on this Christmas card is of a ‘third prize design’ in such a contest.
