May all the pleasures of the season attend you 1885 christmas card

When Queen Victoria’s 5 year old son, Albert Edward, Prince of Wales, was painted wearing a sailor suit, so began the 19th century fashion of dressing boys and girls in a nautical style. Britain’s Royal Navy was at this time the most powerful in the world and dressing children in its uniform symbolised a great national pride.
