Originally a Quaker, Shorthouse joined the Church of England. Author of The Little Schoolmaster Mark, Sir Percival and The Countess Eve. His most famous book John Ingelsant, published in 1881 has been acclaimed as the greatest Anglo-Catholic novel in English Literature.
