14 September 1909. Louis Bleriot completed the first flight across a large body of water in a heaver-than-air craft when he crossed the English Channel on 25 July 1909, receiving a prize of 1000 British pounds for doing so.
According to Sir Benjamin (Sir Benjamin Stone and His Sitters, The Strand Magazine, 1910), 'trousers rarely come out well in a photograph. Perhaps those of M. Bleriot are amongst the best.'
