Broad Street bus lane enforcement
About the bus lane enforcement
Bus lane restrictions on Broad Street have been enforced since December 2024.
These restrictions were introduced in 2022 when the Metro extension to Five Ways opened. Despite this, some drivers continued to use the lanes, causing delays to buses and Metro services. Cameras are now in place to issue fines to anyone driving or stopping in the bus lanes, helping to prevent further disruption.
Motorists who breach the restrictions will be liable to a penalty charge notice of £70.
Lack of enforcement is no excuse for driving in a bus lane.
Bus lane and bus gate restrictions
Broad Street bus lanes and bus gates operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. General traffic is not allowed in the following areas:
- Underpass linking Broad Street to Hagley Road (into and out of the city): the only permitted vehicles are buses and trams.
- Broad Street (into city) – between Sheepcote Street and Berkley Street: the only permitted vehicles are buses, trams, and taxis (black cabs)
- Broad Street (out of city) – between Berkley Street and Granville Street: the only permitted vehicles are buses, trams, and taxis (black cabs)
- Tram and bus interchange at Centenary Square: the only permitted vehicles are buses, trams, bicycles, and taxis (black cabs).
Street conditions may change from what’s shown on the map, especially during roadworks or events. Always pay attention to road signs and use your own judgment while driving.
