Plan Ahead this Christmas

Christmas Travel

Earlier this month we saw the return of the Frankfurt Christmas Market, as well as the ice rink and big wheel in Centenary Square which kickstarted the festive celebrations. Travelling to these city centre attractions is best done by walking, cycling or public transport (don't forget the park and ride services). We continue to advise that you plan ahead and use Transport for West Midland's journey planner.

Why not wrap up warm and try out West Midlands Cycle Hire. Receive your first ride free (up to 30-minutes) until the 30 November.

If you do travel by private car to the city centre make sure you check to see if your vehicle will be charged in the Clean Air Zone.

Black Friday

This weekend is set to be busy with the Christmas attractions and many people heading into the city centre to grab a Black Friday deal.

If you are planning a trip, you can help to reduce congestion by thinking about when and how you travel:

  • Saturday afternoon will be busiest. Consider visiting on Saturday morning or Sunday.
  • By Saturday lunch time, car parks in the main shopping area will be full. If you've travelled by car, don't drive around looking for a space; use Snow Hill, Millennium Point or Five Ways car parks instead. Please note that Moat Lane, Pershore Street and Grand Central NCP car parks are all closed.
  • Be aware of disruption in Digbeth and the wider Eastside area. You will still be able to access the area and car parks but avoid travelling at peak times and plan ahead.

Public Transport

Over the main Christmas period, public transport is likely to run based on amended timetables and you are advised to check these before you travel. Detailed information can be found on National Rail and operators' websites, including National Express West Midlands. The Coronavirus pandemic should still be considered and may affect the service so always leave plenty of time and plan ahead.

For public transport and ticketing options visit: Transport for West Midlands and National Express West Midlands.

Suspension of Metro services

Earlier this year a repair programme was implemented to address cracks identified on several of the Midlands Metro trams. As part of this work it has become necessary for additional repairs to be carried out which started on Saturday 13 November 2021.

There will be no metro services between Wolverhampton and Birmingham in both directions until further notice.

Ticket acceptance is in place on bus services 74/79 and local rail services. For shorter journeys, please consider walking or cycling.
