Towards a New Road Safety Strategy

Towards a New Road Safety Strategy for Birmingham

Improvement of road safety in Birmingham is an ongoing challenge, and working together to make our roads safer is a priority for us and our partners.

We have all been saddened by the recent terrible incidents on our roads involving cyclists and pedestrians, and our thoughts are with families and friends of those affected.

The City Council, in partnership with West Midlands Police, the West Midlands Police & Crime Commissioner, the Director of Transport for West Midlands and the regional Walking & Cycling Commissioner have set out a vision for safer roads, prioritising people rather than vehicles.

Bike Week and Clean Air Day 2023

Throughout #Bike Week100, we shared 7 fantastic Cycling Stories in our 'Making Connections' series of films. These films featured stories from across Birmingham and showcased different aspects of cycling such as cycling to school, e-cargo bikes for business, social cycling groups, and more!

You can watch the Making Connections films on our Youtube Channel.

Clean Air Day 2023 saw some great celebrations across the city.

On Thursday 15 June we were outside Snow Hill Station alongside colleagues from Colmore BID, EcoBirmingham and New Routes Bike Project.

The event saw the launch of the BRAND NEW 69 Wards by Bike or Foot maps produced by Eco Birmingham and anyone who came by bike received a free Waylands Yard coffee voucher. Colleagues were also at New Street Station, showing our #TimeToAct film, and encouraging people to make Clean Air pledges.

On Wednesday 14 June we held a fabulous event in the Council House for our brilliant schools in Birmingham who have been actively encouraging greener transport through Modeshift STARS. Pupils took part in an exciting and informative clean air workshop 'The Pollution Solution' delivered by the Big Wheel Theatre Company, and were then presented with their Modeshift STARS certificates by the Lord Mayor of Birmingham.

Brum Breathes Fund

The Brum Breathes Fund aims to support projects across Birmingham that help improve air quality. These projects should help to raise awareness of the impact of poor air quality on our health. In total, there is just over £4m of funding available up to the end of March 2025! Schemes or projects that might be supported by the fund include: cycle racks, school traffic exclusion plans, sustainable transport measures. Do you have an idea for the funding?
