Road Harm Reduction Strategy

Birmingham Road Harm Reduction Strategy is currently open for consultation. This strategy sets out a bold approach to transform Birmingham’s roads and streets to make them safer, healthier, more inclusive, and more attractive.

We are hosting some drop-in sessions for this consultation, where you can speak with the team to find out more, ask any questions, and provide your feedback.

These sessions are as follows:

• Ladywood Share Shack on Friday 8 March at 15:30 to 18:30
• Small Heath Library on Thursday 14 March at 10:15 to 12:45
• The Council House on Wednesday 20 March 2024 at 10:00 to 13:00

Regional Road Safety Action Plan consultation

Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) is calling on residents to help make the region’s roads safer with the launch of its Regional Road Safety Action Plan consultation.

This Action Plan builds on the refreshed Regional Road Safety Strategy launched last year and sets out how we can create a safer environment for all road users based on Vision Zero.

Walking and Cycling Index report for Birmingham

Walking and Cycling Index is the biggest assessment of walking, wheeling, and cycling in urban areas in the UK and Ireland, with 23 cities and city regions participating.

The 2023 report for Birmingham is now available. This includes data from an independent survey of 1,176 residents aged 16 or above in Birmingham, which was undertaken from March to June 2023. 

Every year walking and cycling in Birmingham results in:

• 1438 serious long-term health conditions prevented
• £454.5 million in economic benefit for individuals and the region
• 37,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions saved
• Up to 220,000 cars taken off the road every day

Ride for their Lives

Birmingham will welcome the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health to their annual conference in March 2024.

To mark this conference, and highlight the rights of children to be physically active and to breathe clean air, a bike ride is being organised for the afternoon of Sunday 24 March.

Anyone wishing to join this ride should assemble along Grosvenor Street West from 2pm to commence riding at 2.30pm. Cyclists will ride a short loop, led by children, finishing in Centenary Square at 3pm where there will be a brief address from Camilla Kingdom, the President of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health.

Public Transport works and diversions

Bus diversions for St Patrick's Day parade

On Sunday 17 March, from 7.30am until 5pm approximately, Bradford Street will be closed between Camp Hill and Moat Lane for the St Patrick’s Day Parade. During this time, bus services 2, 3, 4, 4A, 5, 6 & 50 will be diverted.

Metro works over the Easter period

This Easter, the Midland Metro Alliance will begin installing infrastructure in the Wednesbury area. At the same time, a structure at the nearby Dudley Street Guns Village tram stop will be reconstructed. Because of this, there will be no Metro services between Wednesbury Parkway and Edgbaston Village (including all Birmingham stops) between Saturday 23 March and Tuesday 9 April.

Alternative public transport provisions will be in place during this period. Details will be shared nearer the time on the West Midland Metro website.

Birmingham Eastside extension

From Sunday 7 April, delivery of the Birmingham Eastside Metro extension will enter a new stage, as spades hit the ground in Moor Street Queensway to extend the track laid in nearby Lower Bull Street through Albert Street. Works will last until approximately Autumn 2024.

This next phase of works will see a temporary tram stop installed outside the Clayton Hotel, allowing passengers to use this section of the new Metro line as early as next year.

While work takes place, there will be some unavoidable changes to bus stop locations within the area. Keep up to date about these works on the TfWM website.

Local Travel Points trial in Halesowen

New local travel hubs offering communities easy access to bikes, electric car chargers and other services are to be trialled on the streets of Halesowen. The first three hubs are set to be installed at Huntingtree Park, Cross Street and Andrew Road over the next two months.

These Local Travel Points are designed to make it easier to choose active, shared, and sustainable travel for short trips, as well as better link communities to wider bus, rail and tram services.
