Bike Week and Clean Air Day
Bike Week - A Century of Cycling
5 to 11 June 2023 sees the 100th annual Bike Week, marking a century of celebrating everyday cycling for everyone.
Bike Week 100 is all about workplace cycling, and we want to encourage as many workplaces as possible to support their staff to ride during the week.
Ways you can get involved…
- Organise a ride with your workplace
- Take on a Bike Week 100 challenge
- Organise an event such as an info stand or bike breakfast to encourage commuters to switch the car for the saddle
- Attend a cycling session at your local community cycle hub

Clean Air Day - Thursday 15 June
The UK's largest campaign to reduce air pollution returns on the 15 June! This year’s theme is Clean up our air to look after your mind.
The campaign is focusing on the fact that cleaning up our air is good for us in many ways. It not only benefits our physical health and the environment but can also protect our mental and brain health.
This year, Birmingham City Council will be supporting Clean Air Day through hosting a #TimeToAct pledge event.
On June 15 join us at Grand Central (outside Pret) to make a pledge to improve air quality across Birmingham. This community engagement event calls on members of the public to make a pledge of their choice. We will also be showing a screening of our #TimeToAct short film about the importance of air quality, featuring pupils from schools across Birmingham. We hope to see you there!
May National Walking Month
Lots of you are already taking part in #Try20, the Living Streets challenge to walk or wheel 20 minutes every day during May.
Everyone who takes part in National Walking Month can be entered into the Living Streets prize draw!
Our Future City Plan
The draft of 'Our Future City: Central Birmingham Framework 2040' plan is now available to download. It is a bold masterplan to transform Birmingham into a greener city of more jobs, better transport options and higher quality, energy efficient new homes. Delivery of the framework’s vision would double the city’s green spaces to a level comparable with Vienna and double Birmingham’s network of active travel routes to 200km.
The Birmingham Transport Summit
The Birmingham Transport Summit took place at the Council House on Wednesday 26 April 2023. This was hosted by Cllr Liz Clements, Cabinet Member for Transport, and featured a range of inspiring speakers and panellists from Birmingham and the West Midlands, as well as from across the UK and Europe. See the Transport Summit resources.
Schools Campaign Junction
Since the start of the year, with support from a dedicated Modeshift Stars Active Travel Coordinator, secondary school aged pupils across Birmingham have been busy researching and developing active travel and road safety behaviour change campaigns.
Last month, saw seven secondary schools from across Birmingham taking part in a ‘Dragon’s Den’ style event to pitch for funding to support their campaign ideas. All schools successfully secured £250 to deliver a range of innovative activities including competitions, park and stride initiatives and video blogs. Well done to everyone involved!
Plan your Travel
Birmingham Pride
Birmingham Pride will be making its return to the city centre this year with the event being held over the weekend of 26 - 28 May. For the Pride parade on Saturday 27 May, there will be road closures in place throughout the day, and a number of bus diversions in place. Please plan your journey ahead of time, walk and cycle wherever possible, avoid travelling during peak times, and leave more time for your journey as services will be busier.
West Midlands Railway Timetable changes
West Midlands Railway is urging passengers to check their train times ahead of a major timetable change this month. From Sunday 21 May a number of changes will be made to the railway timetable and its services, particularly impacting routes via Birmingham Snow Hill which include destinations such as Worcester, Kidderminster and Stratford-upon-Avon.
Active Travel Academy Research Showcase
This event is a unique opportunity for practitioners and fellow researchers to engage with the latest research from the Active Travel Academy at the University of Westminster and to discuss the most pressing questions for future research. Researchers from the Active Travel Academy will be in central Birmingham (a venue near New St station) on Wednesday 21 June to share findings from the wide range of work they have been doing. Find out more and register your interest.
