Pre Application Advice
Advice on your planning application is available from us if you want to check what you are proposing to do before you formally submit your application to us. We can also check you have included all the relevant information in your application so it gets decided as quickly as possible.
-
We are committed to helping you obtain all the information and advice you can before submitting a planning application. If you want to extend your house you are welcome to discuss proposals with us before you submit your application. You can visit our reception, where there is always a planning officer available for general advice, or contact us.
For larger, complex, or site specific schemes we ask that information is submitted in writing. You should include the site address, details of the proposals and a sketch plan. We might also ask you to do this if you visit us. The Pre- Application Advice Note at the bottom of this page has been prepared to explain what we need from you and what you can expect from us.
Pre-application advice can help speed up the planning application process as it is a way of making sure we have all the correct information from the start. Any potential problems can also be highlighted before you submit an application.
-
We want to respond to requests for pre-application advice as efficiently as possible. To enable improvements to our service, we now only accept requests for pre-application advice on the form at the bottom of this page. The guidance note below explains the process in more detail.
Please complete the form and submit it along with details of the proposal and any plans or other relevant information. When we acknowledge your request we will give you contact numbers for further enquiries.
This form is now the only way of making pre application enquiries.
-
Information provided to us as part of this pre-application advice service will be treated in confidence, unless any public consultation has been carried out by the applicant as part of that process. Any information submitted as part of any subsequent planning application will be available for public inspection.
However, you should be mindful that if a formal Freedom of Information request is submitted to the Council, we may be obliged to disclose any information that is not marked ‘confidential’. This should be borne in mind if any commercially sensitive information is submitted at either stage.
Pre application details will not appear on the Planning Online website.

Planning Aid is an organisation that provides free and impartial advice, to both community groups and individuals on planning issues. To complement our service, you may find additional support available through accessing some of the information they provide.
The Planning Pack may be a good place to start, bringing together information on town and country planning processes in one place.
