Check if you qualify for a student reduction in your Council Tax bill

Do you qualify?

Completing this form, checks if you qualify for any student reduction.

A student’s non British partner or dependent is not included when we count the number of adults living in your home. If this circumstance applies to you, a member of your household or your property, then you may able to claim a reduction.

The following are not classed as students and are therefore liable for Council Tax:

  • people studying at evening classes or
  • courses taken in connection with a person's job, such as day release

If you qualify, you will then be asked to complete the relevant student application.

You must provide all the information and proofs required, otherwise your application will not be processed, and you will not receive any further contact.

Forms can be completed by third parties such as liable parents, partners and carers who have student adults residing with them and liable landlords who have student tenants living in their property.

Be aware that tudents cannot be held liable for Council Tax when there is another non student liable for the tax. In those circumstances, students will not be able to view the account via the Council Tax Online link, as this will give an error message.

Relevant checks will be made before a student reduction is approved.

Once we have awarded the reduction we will notify you within 14 days.
