Birmingham successfully bids for £52 million to regenerate key parts of the city

Published: Wednesday, 27th October 2021

The council has successfully bid for funding to support important initiatives happening across the city.

Three of Birmingham City Council's four bids for the Levelling Up Fund have been successful, with the city securing over £52 million in new funding.

Funding has been secured for the following projects:

  • A457 Dudley Road Improvements – major transport improvements to help reduce congestion, encourage active travel (walking and cycling), provide better facilities for public transport users and improve connectivity to new housing developments where more than 2,000 new houses are currently being built.
    £19.941m
  • Moseley Road Baths and Balsall Heath Library – to allow for the next phase of restoring the Grade II listed Edwardian swimming pool and library.
    £15.539m
  • Remediation of the former Birmingham Wheels Site (Bordesley Park) – which will act as a catalyst for the area’s regeneration and help create up to 3,000 jobs in the area.
    £17.145m

Unfortunately, the Government has opted not to fund the redevelopment of Erdington High Street.

Responding to today's announcement, Leader of Birmingham City Council, Councillor Ian Ward said:

"As part of our commitment to genuinely levelling up for the people and communities of Birmingham, we're securing investment and funding to create jobs and opportunities and I'm delighted that we can now progress three of these four important projects.

"The remediation of the Wheels Site, ongoing restoration of Moseley Road Baths and A457 Dudley Road Improvements will make a big difference to some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the country and we will work hard to ensure our communities reap the rewards.

"It is disappointing that the Government has chosen not to support the people of Erdington, but we will continue to push for funding and investment to ensure that all our communities can benefit from the levelling-up agenda."
