Birmingham tower blocks statement

Published: Thursday, 15th June 2017

The following is a statement on Birmingham’s tower blocks following today’s tragic incident in London:

Birmingham City Council’s director of housing, Robert James, said: “We are all saddened by the awful scenes in London today.  Whilst we would not speculate on the causes of the fire, we would like to reassure all our council tenants that we have a range of safety measures in place at our tower blocks and where refurbishments works have been carried out we have used fire resistant materials.  In addition we have a team of officers who are accredited fire risk assessors and they administer our fire prevention programmes.”

Notes –

  • All our blocks have a current fire risk assessment
  • We inspect our blocks on a daily basis and any fire risks are identified and dealt with as a priority
  • We liaise closely with West Midland Fire service
  • We have a programme of fire stopping works
