Consultation on the future of Birmingham's high streets

The Birmingham Urban Centres Framework consultation starts on 26 November, covering more than 70 urban centres and 100 parades.

With over 51,100 homes, significant new jobs and major infrastructure planned over the next 15 years, Urban Centres and parades will have a central role in delivering the city’s agenda for inclusive economic growth. With major challenges being faced on the high street from changing consumer demands and patterns of activity, the network needs to evolve further to ensure it remains relevant and resilient for the future.

An initial list of priority centres of transformation has been identified, including major changes to Perry Barr with the investment in the Commonwealth Games Athletes Village. The other centres of transformation in the draft framework are Sutton Coldfield, Bordesley Green, Coventry Road, Stechford, Meadway, Erdington, Northfield, Stirchley and Alum Rock Road.

Leader of Birmingham City Council Cllr Ian Ward said: "Urban centres and parades have always been a focal point for our communities and as Birmingham continues to grow the network will need to evolve and adapt to ensure their vital role continues. Through the framework we are setting out how these centres can become catalysts for growth, and so in turn strengthen their role at the heart of the Birmingham’s diverse communities. I am delighted to be launching this framework to guide the future transformation of our Urban Centres and promote inclusive economic growth.”
