Birmingham marks Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month with renewed focus on support, partnership and provision

Published: Friday, 5th June 2026

Birmingham City Council is marking Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) History Month this June by highlighting new work to better support communities across the city.

The new work includes the introduction of a dedicated team to provide support, strengthened partnerships throughout the city and the reopening of the designated transit site on Proctor Street.

The council’s Gypsy and Traveller service is now led by a dedicated team focused on improving engagement, building trust and ensuring GRT communities can access the support they need.

Alongside this, the council has been working with a range of partners, including West Midlands Police, education services, housing providers and charities to improve outcomes for GRT communities.

These partnerships are helping to connect families with key services such as healthcare, education and safeguarding, whilst also supporting earlier intervention and more joined-up working.

As part of this wider programme of work, Birmingham City Council has also reopened its official Gypsy and Traveller transit site on Proctor Street, providing a safe and managed space for those travelling through the city. The site forms an important part of the council’s approach to supporting GRT communities while reducing the impact of unauthorised encampments.

Through this work, the council is reaffirming its commitment to inclusion to ensure GRT communities are recognised, respected, and supported as part of the city’s diverse population.

Paul Langford, Executive Director of City Housing at Birmingham City Council, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to create real change. We’re working closely with communities and partners to better understand needs, challenge misconceptions and build a service we can be proud of.

“Building trust is key. We’re starting to see positive changes, with partners working more closely together and residents feeling more confident in sharing their experiences with us.”

“Providing suitable, well-managed sites is a vital step in supporting communities and creating better outcomes for everyone.”

Gypsy, Roma and Traveller History Month is a national initiative that celebrates the rich heritage and contributions of GRT communities, while also raising awareness of the challenges they face.

The council urges anyone who requires support, contact the dedicated team on GRT-team@birmingham.gov.uk or visit the dedicated webpage here.
