Birmingham Unites to Protect Women and Girls at Citywide International Women’s Day Event

Published: Friday, 13th March 2026

Birmingham City Council will host a civic event 2pm on Tuesday 17 March at the Council House to mark International Women’s Day and reinforce the city’s ongoing commitment to protect women and girls.

Earlier this year, the Birmingham Community Safety Partnership launched its strengthened Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) Strategy, setting out a citywide approach to preventing abuse, challenging misogyny and violence, and improving support for survivors. Alongside this, the Council continues to deliver its Domestic Abuse Prevention Strategy 2024+, which prioritises prevention, early intervention, accessible support, and holding perpetrators to account.

The event will bring together partners, professionals, communities and organisations to showcase the collaborative work underway across the city. Through frontline insights and shared learning, the event highlights Birmingham’s united mission to create a safer, more equal city for women and girls.

Birmingham’s Commitment to Women’s Safety

Birmingham remains steadfast in its commitment to protecting women and girls from all forms of harm — including domestic abuse, harassment, coercion, misogyny, violence, and exploitation. This commitment is reflected in the city’s strategic approach, which focuses on:

  • Preventing abuse before it happens, through education, community work, and early intervention
  • Responding quickly and safely, ensuring support is accessible, confidential, and tailored to women’s needs
  • Supporting survivors, with services working together to provide safe accommodation, specialist guidance, and recovery-focused care
  • Strengthening partnerships, recognising that protecting women requires collaboration across local government, policing, health, education, and the voluntary sector.

This event represents an important opportunity to enhance that partnership work to continue shaping the city’s approach.

Event Highlights

  • Updates on Birmingham’s VAWG Strategy and Domestic Abuse Prevention Strategy, including prevention work, survivor support, enforcement and partnership activity
  • Speeches and insights from frontline services, specialist organisations and local leaders
  • Insights on working together to ensure women and girls are kept safe in Birmingham
  • A marketplace hosting organisations that provide support, advice and resources for women and girls across Birmingham.

Councillor Nicky Brennan, Chair of the Domestic Abuse Local Strategic Partnership Board, said: “Every woman and girl in Birmingham deserves to live free from fear and harm. Our VAWG Strategy and Domestic Abuse Prevention Strategy reflect a city stepping up, speaking out, and working together to make that a reality. By bringing partners and communities into the same room, we strengthen the networks that protect women and amplify the voices of survivors who guide our approach. This event is about building a safer Birmingham for all.”

Councillor Jamie Scott, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, said: “International Women’s Day is a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to protect and uplift women and girls. Birmingham is united in tackling violence, confronting misogyny, and supporting survivors with compassion and strength. Through this event, we are reinforcing our long-term commitment to meaningful change and ensuring every woman and girl in our city can feel safe, valued, and heard.”
