Birmingham City Council Wins National Recognition at Prestigious CTSI Hero Awards

Birmingham City Council’s Regulation and Enforcement team earned national recognition with two honours at the 2025 CTSI Hero Awards at the House of Lords on Tuesday, 2 December.

Mohammed Tariq’s groundbreaking initiative, Operation CLOUD, was awarded the Highly Commended winner in the Outstanding Project category, recognising its innovative approach to tackling complex enforcement challenges and safeguarding consumers. In addition, Naseem Shamas, a dedicated member of the team, received the Institute Hero Award, celebrating her exceptional contribution to protecting the public and upholding trading standards.

The CTSI Hero Awards are among the most respected accolades in the sector, spotlighting individuals and organisations that go above and beyond to deliver excellence in consumer protection.

Councillor Jamie Tennant, Cabinet Member for Social Justice, Community Safety and Equalities, said: “This is a proud moment for Birmingham. Operation CLOUD demonstrates how we lead the way nationally in tackling emerging threats and protecting our communities. Naseem’s recognition as an Institute Hero reflects the outstanding talent and commitment within our council. These awards show that Birmingham is setting the standard for innovation and integrity in enforcement.”

Mohammed Tariq, recipient of the Highly Commended award in the Outstanding Project category, added: “Winning two national awards at the CTSI Hero Awards is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our team. Operation CLOUD has delivered real results for residents and businesses, and Naseem’s individual achievement highlights the passion and professionalism that drive our success.”

Naseem Shamas, recipient of the Institute Hero Award, said: “I’m honoured to receive this recognition. It reflects the collaborative effort of our entire team and our shared commitment to protecting consumers and ensuring fair trading practices. I’m proud to represent Birmingham City Council on a national stage.”

The ceremony, hosted in the historic Cholmondeley Room and Terrace at the House of Lords, brought together leading figures in consumer protection, enforcement, and government.
