Third commissioners' letter lead commissioner comment

Published: Monday, 1st December 2025

Leader commissioner Tony McArdle has issued a statement on the third letter regarding Birmingham City Council's progress.

"Commissioners recognise that the hard work that has gone into putting down foundations for the long-term recovery of the Council hasn't had much attention as issues such as the continuing waste dispute have dominated the headlines.

"Nonetheless, the Council has made some commendable progress in a number of areas, such as in resolving its Equal Pay responsibilities, in the work to implement its Oracle computer system, and in balancing its finances, and we are pleased that the minister has recognised these advances.

"There is still much for the Council to do so that it can deliver its ambitions for the city and to operate effectively across the full range of its responsibilities and we continue to support it as it works through these challenges.

"We intend to set out in the New Year what needs to be accomplished over the next three years in order for those foundations to be fully put in place and confidently built upon."
